It was another enjoyable day on the fourth day of the 2014 YKAA Summer Camp. Teacher Tiger lectured about the day’s theme, “For Peace in East Asia.” The lesson objectives of the day were:
- Understand the situation in North Korea today: A Secret State of North Korea.
- Gain a vision for a united Korea.
- Know the current issues in East Asia and the different perspectives of Korea, Japan and China
Starting with preview questions, she introduced the lives of North Korean people today through PBS-TV documentary named Secret State of North Korea. Leaders’ presentations were followed about the differences between South and North Korea such as language, economy, society, culture and politics. Students discussed before and after the unification of Korea and perspectives of the unification of Korea from other countries.
After that, students played charades about East Asian countries. Teacher Tiger introduced controversial issues in East Asia such as Yashkuni shrine, the historical distortion in Japanese history textbooks, postwar compensation by Japan and Dokdo. Each camper wrote his/her ideas of the solution for each issue on a post-it and place them on the issue board.
After the lecture, all campers divided into four groups and did classroom activities. Today's snack, the five-color Bibimbap, represented the harmony of nature. Five differently color ingredients were used in the Bibimbap.
After the fun snacks, there was another class activity. Following the activity, all teams gave presentations about the activities. The fourth day ended with everyone dancing and singing "Dokdo is Korean land".
