The first day of the 2014 YKAA Summer Camp ended successfully with 22 students and 7 teachers.

Teacher DaeJangGeum introduced the objective and goals of the camp. Quoting one of the greatest Korean historians Shin Chaeho, “People who forget the history of their country has no future," she emphasized the importance of learning history. Then, teachers and leaders were introduced.

Teacher DaeJangGeum lectured about today’s theme, “THE OPEN PORT PERIOD (1860-1910).”  The lesson objectives of today were:

 

  • Know about the domestic and foreign situation of Joseon during the open port period
  • Understand the process, reasons and aftermath of the events from 1860 to 1910 inJoseon
  • Be able to make a timeline of the events
  • Know about the people and their life in the open port era
  • Understand the reason why Korea was annexed by Japan

She introduced people and incidents during the era, such as King Gojong, Queen Min, Progressive leaser Kim, Okgyun, Peasant movement leader Jeon, Bongjun. She compared Korean history to world history such as Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War. The leaders presented some of incidents after they researched by themselves.

After the lecture, each team went to their classroom and did the activities. The campers had Royal Court Rice Cake and Sweet Rice Drink as a snack. The snack was related to today’s theme. After snack, all students joined to sing and dance with "Arirang" song. All students eagerly participated in learning the dance and song. During Presentation time, each team chose a theme or incident during the Open Port Period and did role plays. Lastly, all campers made a timeline of the era.

After all campers were dismissed, teachers and leaders got together to check-in and plan for tomorrow. Tomorrow’s theme is the Independence Movement during Japanese Occupation Period (1910-1945) and the lecturer will be Teacher Hunmin.
